I watched The Hunger Games with some friends. They'd read the book but I hadn't; I only knew as much about it as one can gather from the wikipedia entry.
I found it deeply disturbing. I felt complicit in watching it, as complicit as the audience at the Games themselves. It felt – this will sound extreme – it felt as if I had gathered a bunch of giggling girlfriends to watch the YouTube video of a murder.
I don't like dystopian fiction. Only young people can afford to think of these stories as a future they should strive to avoid; people my age know that one step across the railroad tracks will take you there right now... I don't find them hopeful. They're devastating. They're just too real.
