Scree

My parents took the children on a Fun and Amazingly Wonderful vacation this week. They did this so that I could work – but my husband and I just had to take a wee vacation ourselves. Yesterday we skipped work and instead climbed South Sister.

South Sister is the third-highest mountain in the state, but climbing it is relatively easy. This here is the hardest part: the scree field leading to the summit. The rocks roll under you feet like ball bearings. Also, all that red plays tricks on your eyes. When you look up – to see how far above your husband is, for example, or to let a downhill climber pass – everything that's not red takes on a blue-green hue. People's faces look ghostly.

Gasp. They would have to haul me up in a bucket. The colours are amazing.

That looks like something on another planet.

Mary -- When we were up there, we met a 70-year-old woman and her husband, who was 74. Imagine!

That is certainly very dramatic looking! And I can well believe that it would be hard to climb.

My dad was talking about going to Bend next year instead of the coast. If we go maybe you'll accompany us up South Sister!
