Generation Z

The family room being suspiciously quiet, I peeked downstairs to see what my seven-year-old was doing. "Sasha? Everything ok?"

Great! she exclaimed, and showed me the iPad screen. The pillow pets commercial, she said, had mentioned that she could browse their full selection online, and look! Look at them all! She'd spent at least 1/2 hour deciding which pillow pets she liked the best, adding one to the shopping cart* and then deleting it and adding another.**

That happened about a week ago. Since then she's noticed that all the toy catalogs arriving in the mail have URLs at the bottom of each page, and she's been going to all their web sites. She likes to search for an item from the catalog (her typing is vastly improving!) in order to "view larger" and to read longer descriptions.***  Right now she's looking at the Pottery Barn catalog online! having admired the snowflake ornaments in their most recent catalog.

*She didn't know it was a shopping cart. She thought it was a game. Please do not tell her what online shopping carts are, thanks.

**I'm sure she blew their November stats. Some ecommerce manager will have a lot of explaining to do!

***Some of them have wish lists, which is a pretty good idea for Generation Z but if any of those companies would like to hire me, I can suggest many usability improvements. Also y'all need an "email this to your grandmother and aunts" widget -- or, better yet, text this to your grandmother.

Genius improvements!

Except that my father doesn't text, or use a computer. I have to rip pages out of catalogs and mail them to him.

My kid spends a lot of time perusing the American Girl website and making lists.

OMG yes, someone needs to set up a "grandparent wish list" company that will generate cross-platform wish lists and provide email AND snail mail options (the snail mail version could include a pre-filled-out order form with the 1-800 number across the top), and make it incredibly kid-friendly.

Bwahahahaha. (I shouldn't do this. By the time I'm a grandma, something that evil will really exist.)

It would be so easy, Jody. Mychristmaslist.com. Audience iis kids too young to have Facebook accounts and their grandparents, who are too old to have them! You've got about a seven year window to make your millions on this : )
