A crowd gathers outside the library at 9:50 in the morning. People of all ages: toddlers, teenagers, middle-aged women, an old man on a mountain bike. They stand apart from another, one here one there, shift their weight, squint in the sun. All are silent; even the toddlers are silent; except that a man in need of a shave, wearing jeans and a baseball cap, makes general comments to the air. No one engages him.
At 10am the librarian unlocks the door and, still silent, still separate, they flow inside.
